Valencia's bats went quiet after an early lead, and a four-run Sylmar fourth proved decisive in a 5-2 non-league loss at home.

The Vikings struck first in the second, Zach Davis singled and scored on Kyle Josing's sacrifice fly, but Sylmar answered with a run in the third and broke it open with four in the fourth, two of them unearned on Valencia miscues, to lead 5-1.

Valencia got one back in the fifth on Dylan Lapa's single and a wild pitch, but could not solve Sylmar's pitching the rest of the way, striking out seven times and going down in order against reliever Michael Gutierrez in the seventh.

Davis went 2-for-2, Cole DeYoung doubled, and Brett Cormany and Brady Redin combined for two scoreless relief innings. A quiet offensive day in a winnable game.
