A brilliant pitching duel went the wrong way. Valencia got seven innings of one-run, eight-strikeout ball from Steven Genovese, the only run against him unearned, but could not make a 1-0 lead stand up, falling 2-1 to Chaminade in eight innings.

Valencia scratched out the game's first run in the fourth. Justin Gaisford doubled to center, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Cole DeYoung's sacrifice fly. It stayed 1-0 deep into the game as Genovese kept the Eagles off the board through six, striking out eight and scattering four hits.

Chaminade tied it in the seventh on a double and a two-out error, then pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth: Austin Maiden singled, stole second, and came home on Andrew Chute's double. Valencia went down in order in the bottom of the eighth to end it.

DeYoung and Gaisford each had two hits for the Vikings, who stranded the potential insurance run in the sixth and could not find the one more run that would have changed the math. A hard-luck loss in a crisply played game.
