A three-run sixth sinks Valencia in a 3-2 loss to Maranatha

Recap

Valencia grabbed an early lead and held it into the sixth, but a two-out rally got away from the Vikings in a 3-2 home loss to Maranatha. Both teams managed just five hits; the difference was a costly Valencia sixth.

The Vikings jumped on Maranatha starter Dylan Hoang in the first. Tyler Wertz singled, Justin Gaisford walked, and Jack Yamamura singled home Wertz; later in the inning Cole DeYoung drew a bases-loaded walk to push across Gaisford for a 2-0 lead. Hoang walked six on the day but wriggled out of trouble, and Valencia stranded the bases loaded in that first inning and again in the fifth.

Dexton Otton was sharp on the mound, three scoreless innings on two hits with three strikeouts, topping out at 88. Jordan Ramos followed with two more shutout frames. But with two outs in the sixth, Ramos walked a batter and hit another, and after a pitching change Maranatha strung together Bryce Geeting's RBI single, a run on a passed ball, and Moses Alvarez's RBI single to take a 3-2 lead.

Jayden Morales closed it out for Maranatha with two scoreless innings for the win. Valencia went down in order in the seventh. A frustrating one for the Vikings, who got the early lead and strong pitching but couldn't add on and gave the lead back in a single tough frame.
